Guyana : Jagdeo promises more investment in sugar, infrastructure and agriculture across Berbice region

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo outlined the PPP’s five-year development agenda for East Berbice, pledging continued investments in sugar, infrastructure, healthcare, and agriculture. Addressing supporters in Albion, he projected higher voter support in the September polls. Jagdeo promised a four-lane road, hospitals, and cheaper electricity, warning that progress depends on the PPP staying in office.
General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, on Sunday laid out his party’s plans for the East Berbice Region over the next five years, promising continued investments in the sugar industry, infrastructure, agriculture and other sectors.
Addressing party supporters at Albion on Sunday afternoon Mr. Jagdeo said because of the massive transformation in the region over the last five years, he is expecting the party’s voter share to increase at the September polls.
“The last elections we got 40-odd thousand votes from this Region, I am looking for at least 55,000 votes in these elections. You know, there are lots of shenanigans, they recognize the might of the PPP, look around here and you will see the might is reflected in this crowd and our party has grown because it is a trustworthy party, because it does what it says and it is a party that plans for future,” Jagdeo stated.
He told his party’s supporters not to trust the other parties and their promises, as he is convinced they will abandon the voters once they get into office. Mr. Jagdeo said major development will only take place under the PPP.
“Without the PPP in office, there will be no four-lane road, come in the next term in the next two years you will be to drive from Moleson creek to New Amsterdam on a four-lane road, you will be able to drive across the Berbice river on four-lane high-span bridge, toll free, the two hospitals that we are building here, will be opened and delivering world-class healthcare to the people in Berbice, Jagdeo says to loud cheers.
Jagdeo promised to boost health care and infrastructure in the region, and also promised more cost of living measures and cheaper electricity.
“Without us in office, Berbice would have been a forgotten county, because there is an institutional discrimination in the PNC and APNU against people who live in Berbice, so whether you are from New Amsterdam or Liverpool or Manchester, or Port Mourant or Albion or Chesney or Blackpush polder or anywhere else in this region you have to understand what is at stake here, that only with a PPP government can this country make progress,” Jagdeo told party supporters.
The Berbice region has been a major backer of the PPP over the years.
