Pakistan : Cooking Oil Prices Rise Despite Global Drop

Harshvardhan Patil, President of NFCSF, has urged unified action among sugar and ethanol industry bodies to address key issues. Speaking at STAI’s centenary event, he stressed revising sugar MSP, ethanol procurement prices, and forming a joint memorandum for the government to ensure industry sustainability and timely farmer payments.

Islamabad, July 26, 2025: After sugar, now cooking oil prices are also causing troubles for Pakistani consumers, as prices are going up locally even when international rates are falling fast.

As per official papers and inside sources, global palm oil prices have fallen by 24% since December 2024, but here in Pakistan, edible oil prices rise by 4.5% in the same time. In many places, people are paying around Rs 150 more per litre, further straining household budgets amid inflationary pressures.

On Friday, Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) held a meeting and showed worry about why the drop in global prices of vegetable ghee and oil is not helping people at home.

The committee got an update from the Ministry of Industries and Production about the supply situation and price movement in the vegetable ghee and cooking oil sector.

Even after hearing the ministry’s guarantee about enough stock available in the country, the committee still showed worry that falling global prices are not really helping local buyers.

The committee called for strict watch to stop unfair price changes and possible group manipulation, and stressed the importance of working closely with the Competition Commission of Pakistan, National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC), and provincial authorities through the Ministry of Industries and Production.
