Uttar Pradesh sugar sector trends from 2017–18 to 2024–25: Area, yield, recovery and production data overview


Uttar Pradesh’s sugarcane area rose from 22.99 to 29.66 lakh hectares (2017–24), dipping slightly in 2024–25. Yields grew from 79.19 to 83.25 t/ha. Production peaked at 2,494.20 lakh tonnes in 2023–24, then dropped. Sugar output declined from 126.37 to 92.45 lakh tonnes. Mill count stayed around 119–122.
As the 2024–25 sugarcane crushing season in Uttar Pradesh concludes, let’s take a look at data from the past eight years in terms of cultivation area, yield, production, and sugar recovery.
According to data from the Uttar Pradesh’s Sugar Industry & Cane Development Department, the total area under sugarcane cultivation has seen a noticeable increase, rising from 22.99 lakh hectares in 2017–18 to a peak of 29.66 lakh hectares in 2023–24, before slightly declining to 29.51 lakh hectares in 2024–25.
Yield per hectare, a key indicator of agricultural productivity, has generally followed an upward trend. It rose from 79.19 tonnes per hectare (t/ha) in 2017–18 to 84.10 t/ha in 2023–24, followed by a marginal dip to 83.25 t/ha in 2024–25.

Total sugarcane production mirrored the trends in area and yield. It increased from 1,820.75 lakh tonnes in 2017–18 to 2,494.20 lakh tonnes in 2023–24, before declining to 2,456.35 lakh tonnes in 2024–25.
The quantity of cane crushed by sugar mills has shown some fluctuations. After exceeding 1,111 lakh tonnes in 2017–18, the figure dropped to 981.68 lakh tonnes in 2023–24 and further to 956.09 lakh tonnes in the current season.
Sugar production has remained relatively volatile over the years. Beginning at 120.50 lakh tonnes in 2017–18, it peaked at 126.37 lakh tonnes in 2019–20, before experiencing a decline, reaching to 92.45 lakh tonnes in 2024–25.
The number of operational sugar mills has remained largely stable, fluctuating within a narrow range, from 119 in 2017–18 to 122 in 2024–25.
