Odisha : Heavy rain ravages paddy and maize crops in Gajapati; farmers in distress demand govt support

Heavy rainfall from a deep depression in Odisha’s Gajapati district has damaged paddy and maize crops in Mohana, especially in Govindapur and Kesara villages. Around 65% of farmland is affected, with sand deposits and flooding worsening losses. Officials plan joint verification and compensation for farmers.

Continuous rainfall over the past two days, triggered by a deep depression, devastated hectares of paddy and maize crops in the Mohana region of Gajapati district in Odisha, leaving farmers anxious about their livelihood. Govindapur and Kesara villages are among the worst affected, where the incessant downpour caused widespread crop damage.

Several paddy fields are reportedly inundated as rainwater overflowed from the surrounding areas, while heavy runoff from nearby hills deposited large amounts of sand across the farmland. The continuous spell of rain also destroyed vast stretches of maize crops, compounding the losses for local cultivators. Farmers across the affected villages were seen attempting to salvage what little remained of their damaged crops.

One affected farmer said the situation had left the community helpless. “In Kesara, around 80 farmers depend mainly on paddy and maize farming. Both crops have been severely damaged. The extent of loss is so high that we cannot recover even in two years without government support,” he said.

Officials Conduct Damage Assessment

An agricultural officer who visited the area confirmed the scale of destruction. The officer said, “Nearly 65% of farmland has been damaged. A joint verification will be carried out, followed by an assessment of the losses. Once the process is completed, farmers may receive compensation.”
