Saudi Arabia on October 3 purchased 455,000 tonnes of wheat in an international tender as part of plans to boost its strategic grain reserves. Saudi Arabia’s State Food Security Agency said on Monday that the purchase was aimed at supporting national food security amid global challenges.
The wheat purchased comes from various regions around the world, including the European Union, the Americas, Australia and the Black Sea region. This is the fourth batch of wheat imported for 2025, reflecting a systematic approach to stockpiling. The agency’s head, Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al-Faris, explained that the new contract strengthens Saudi Arabia’s ability to meet the needs of all the country’s flour milling companies.
Deliveries are expected between December 2025 and January 2026 and will arrive on seven ships distributed across the kingdom’s ports. Specifically, two ships with 130,000 tons will arrive at the Islamic Port of Jeddah, three ships with 195,000 tons at the commercial port of Yambu, and two ships with 130,000 tons at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. Al-Faris stressed that such logistics will ensure efficient resource allocation across the country.
Seventeen qualified global grain trading companies participated in the tender, and contracts were awarded to the three firms that offered the lowest prices and met the technical requirements. Saudi Arabia continues to implement a long-term strategy through the State Agency for Food Security to achieve sustainable food security and ensure sufficient quantities of essential commodities in all regions of the kingdom. It is worth noting that in May last year, the agency already purchased about 621 thousand tons of wheat as part of the third batch of imports this year.
