Europe pays higher price for sunflower oil and this is diverting part of Ukrainian supplies from India

India’s sunflower oil market remains open to Ukrainian supplies despite rising Russian exports and high European prices. Buyers trust Ukrainian oil for quality. India imports around 16.5 million tons of vegetable oil annually, with demand rising. For soybean oil, Argentina supplies 50%, but India is diversifying sources, including Russia, China, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt.
The Indian sunflower oil market remains open to Ukraine, even despite the increase in supply from Russia and high European prices. This was stated by Sunvin Group CEO and President of the International Sunflower Oil Association (ISOA) Sandeep Bajoria during the Trend&Hedge Club.
According to him, Russia is trying to increase its presence in the Indian sunflower oil market by offering larger volumes.
“In addition, it should be taken into account that Europe is currently paying a higher price, and this is diverting part of Ukrainian supplies from India. But I want to emphasize: when a Ukrainian seller appears on our market, Indian buyers always prefer Ukrainian oil. It is a matter of trust and quality. We already import about 16.5 million tons of vegetable oil per year, and this demand is growing by at least 1 million tons annually. Therefore, India is ready to continue buying – no matter how much Ukraine produces,” said Bajoria.
As for soybean oil, Argentina remains India’s key supplier at present: India buys about 50% of their exports.
“At the same time, we are open to other directions – we are open to buying as much as Ukraine can give us. We are open to buying from Russia, buying from China. We are already taking some from Turkey, some from Iraq and Egypt. In 2026, our soybean oil imports will be 5.5 million tons, so we need different sources,” added Bajoria.
