Saudi Arabia forecasts increased wheat demand
Saudi Arabia’s wheat consumption is expected to reach 4.6 million tonnes in 2025/26, driven by population growth, migrant inflows and rising tourism. Domestic output is 1.1 million tonnes, with 3.1 million tonnes needed through imports. The GFSA has already contracted 2.05 million tonnes, mainly from Russia and other key suppliers.
Domestic wheat consumption in Saudi Arabia in the 2025/26 season is projected to reach 4.6 million tonnes, with annual growth of 3-4%. This trend is driven by three key factors:
➡️ Rapid population growth.
➡️ Increasing number of migrant workers.
➡️ A booming tourism sector.
As the leisure and hospitality industry expands, demand from the food service sector, particularly for bakery products, is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. Meanwhile, the country’s General Authority for Food Security (GFSA) estimates domestic wheat production at 1.1 million tonnes in 2025/26. An additional 3.1 million tonnes will be imported.
To date, the GFSA has contracted 2.05 million tonnes of wheat for delivery through April 2026. Russia is the main supplier, followed by Romania, Brazil, Uruguay and Bulgaria.
