Egypt reduced wheat imports
Egypt cut wheat imports 17% this year after boosting domestic procurement, Supplies Minister Sherif Farouk said. The state bought four million tons from farmers, saving $230–250 million on imports in 2025. Current wheat reserves are sufficient to cover national consumption for approximately six months, according to Bloomberg and official statements.
This year, Egypt reduced its wheat imports by 17% compared to last year thanks to increased domestic purchases, according to Supplies Minister Sherif Farouk, Bloomberg reports.
During the procurement campaign, which ended in August, the government purchased 4 million tons of wheat from local farmers for the state fund.
The government managed to reduce its wheat import bill by $230-250 million in 2025.
Existing wheat reserves are sufficient for six months.
