Prices of rice, winter vegetables, sugar and edible oil have risen in Dhaka markets over the past week, driven by cold weather disrupting harvests and tight supplies. Vegetables, rice varieties, sugar and loose cooking oil all saw notable increases, squeezing household budgets.

After remaining static for about a month, prices of rice, winter vegetables, sugar and edible oil have increased in the city markets over the past week, adding pressure on household budgets of the commoners.

Farmers are struggling to harvest vegetables due to intense cold in the northern and northwestern regions, which has affected timely supply.

“Vegetables are arriving in smaller quantities from outside Dhaka,” said Rafiqul Millat, a trader at Beribadh-Mohammadpur.

He said that prices may ease once temperatures rise.
