Sunflower prices in Ukraine are rising again, following oil prices, but will be limited by increased supplies from Argentina.
Russian attacks on Ukrainian oil plants and Black Sea ports have tightened sunflower oil supplies, pushing Russian FOB prices up $40–50/t to $1,240–1,250 and India CIF rates to $1,350–1,360/t. Ukraine’s domestic prices rose to 27,000–28,000 UAH/t, while Argentina boosts sunflower exports amid global demand.
Russia’s targeted attacks on Ukrainian oil extraction plants and the infrastructure of Black Sea ports have limited supplies of Ukrainian sunflower oil, leading to a much-needed increase in prices for Russian sunflower oil by $40-50 per ton to $1,240-1,250 per ton FOB Black Sea, and increased demand prices for sunflower oil for delivery to India by $25-30 per ton to $1,350-1,360 per ton CIF Mumbai.
Limited supply and the shutdown of some Ukrainian factories also led to a sharp increase in demand prices for sunflower oil in Ukraine for delivery to ports, which have increased by $40-50/t to $1,250-1,260/t since the beginning of the year.
High oil prices contributed to an increase in sunflower purchase prices in Ukraine by 500-1000 UAH/t to 27,000-28,000 UAH/t or 550-580 $/t excluding VAT (for 50% oil content) with delivery to the plant, although on the eve of the New Year, prices dropped to the minimum level this season of 26,000-27,500 UAH/t or 540-570 $/t excluding VAT.
Ukrainian farmers need to take advantage of the new wave of rising sunflower prices and increase sales, as some factories will be shut down or operating at reduced capacity due to the risk of further shelling. The increased forecast for Argentina’s 2026 sunflower harvest has already boosted shipments of 2025 sunflower seeds, and starting in March, shipments of the new crop of sunflower oil will also increase.
According to Oil World, Argentina increased sunflower seed exports to 63,000 tons in December 2025, with high shipment rates continuing in January. The main recipients of Argentine sunflower seed in December were the Black Sea countries, the EU, and South Africa.
According to analysts’ forecasts, sunflower exports from Argentina will amount to 400 thousand tons in January-March, and 290 thousand tons in April-June, and will reach 860 thousand tons in 2025/26 MY, the majority of which will be delivered to South Africa.
It should also be taken into account that palm oil prices will begin to decline in the coming days, which will increase pressure on the prices of other oils, especially soybean and sunflower.
