Indonesia bans palm oil waste exports to boost domestic energy use

Indonesia will ban exports of palm oil waste, including used cooking oil, to prioritize domestic use for biodiesel and aviation fuel. President Prabowo said palm oil is a strategic resource and must support national energy self-sufficiency, reducing fuel imports and strengthening Indonesia’s energy security.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced that the country is banning the export of palm oil waste, including used cooking oil, in order to prioritize its use for domestic needs, particularly for energy self-sufficiency, Indonesian news agency Antara reports.

During the 2026 National Central-Regional Government Coordination Meeting in Sentul, West Java Province, Prabowo emphasized that the rich palm oil resources should primarily serve national interests.

“Palm oil waste, including waste oil, is used to produce aviation fuel. Therefore, I am banning its export. It must first serve the people of Indonesia,” the president declared.

He described palm oil as a strategic raw material with a wide range of uses, from cooking oil and food products to soap and biodiesel. Prabowo called it a “beautiful crop” capable of meeting global demand.

The President noted that international companies are interested in Indonesia’s raw materials, but national needs remain a priority. The use of raw materials, including waste oil, will help develop domestic biodiesel and aviation fuel production, reducing the country’s dependence on imported fuels and strengthening energy self-sufficiency.
