Maharashtra leads India’s sugar output as top three states contribute over 87%
Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka account for 87.48% of India’s sugar output this season, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd.. Maharashtra leads with 89.80 LMT, followed by Uttar Pradesh (65.60 LMT) and Karnataka (41.70 LMT), driving higher national production year-on-year.
New Delhi: Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka together account for 87.48 per cent of India’s total sugar production so far this season, reaffirming their dominance in the country’s sugar sector, according to data released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF) on February 14.
Maharashtra has emerged as the largest producer with 89.80 LMT of sugar, a sharp increase from 68.10 LMT during the same period last season. The state has crushed 960.43 LMT of cane, significantly higher than last year’s 740.22 LMT.
Uttar Pradesh follows with sugar production of 65.60 LMT, up from 63.25 LMT last season, while Karnataka has produced 41.70 LMT, compared with 37.20 LMT a year earlier.
Together, the three states continue to anchor national production, even as output has improved in several other regions, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Industry officials said the strong performance of these states has played a key role in pushing national sugar output well above last year’s levels.
