Tamil Nadu : Farmers demand fair price for maize from pvt buyers
Farmers under the Tamil Nadu Lake and River Irrigation Farmers’ Association staged a protest in Tiruchirappalli, demanding private traders procure maize at the Centre’s MSP of ₹2,400/quintal. They allege traders are paying ₹1,800–1,900, causing heavy losses and threatening livelihoods.
Trichy: The Tamil Nadu lake and river irrigation farmers’ association on Monday demanded private buyers procure maize at the govt’s minimum support price. The association members held a protest at the Trichy district collectorate and garlanded maize sacks symbolically to underline their demand.
Dozens of members, led by P Viswanathan, participated in the protest. They handed over a memorandum at the collectorate, calling on the Tamil Nadu govt and district officials to secure the full 2,400 per quintal MSP declared by the central govt for maize farmers.
The association stated that private traders are purchasing maize at just 1,800 to 1,900 per quintal, much lower than the Union govt’s 2,400 MSP. This disparity is inflicting heavy financial losses and jeopardizing farmers’ livelihoods, they said.
Farmers charged that the Trichy district administration has taken no action despite repeated petitions.
