UP clears record Rs 3.15 lakh crore cane payments in nine years
The Uttar Pradesh government has paid a record Rs 3.15 lakh crore to sugarcane farmers over the past nine years, benefiting about 4.8 million growers. Improved monitoring, digital payment systems, and higher cane prices for the 2025–26 season aim to strengthen farmer incomes and boost sugarcane production.
Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has paid a record Rs 3.15 lakh crore to sugarcane farmers over the past nine years, providing major relief to growers and boosting the rural economy, UNI reported.
According to the state’s Sugarcane Commissioner Ministhy S., the payments have benefited about 4.8 million sugarcane farmers across the state.
He said strict monitoring by the government and regular reviews have helped speed up payments by sugar mills. During the current crushing season, 42 sugar mills have cleared 100 percent of the cane price due to farmers.
To make the payment system more transparent, the government has introduced a digital monitoring system using escrow accounts. Farmers are also receiving updates related to cane supply slips, field surveys and payments through SMS and the department’s online portal.
The commissioner said the government has also increased the sugarcane price by Rs 30 per quintal for the 2025–26 crushing season. Under the revised rates, farmers will receive Rs 400 per quintal for early varieties and Rs 390 per quintal for normal varieties. The hike is expected to provide farmers with an additional benefit of about Rs 3,000 crore.
Efforts are also being made to increase sugarcane production through the use of new technologies. For this, agreements have been signed with the National Sugar Institute, Kanpur and the Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research to improve the availability of quality seed and encourage farmers to adopt improved farming practices.
