India allows 67,719 tonnes of sugar exports to Maldives under bilateral pact for FY27
India has allowed export of 67,719 tonnes of sugar to Maldives for FY27 under a bilateral pact. The move ensures steady trade flows and supports mills, though limited volumes mean minimal impact on domestic supply in a tightly balanced sugar market.
The Centre has permitted the export of 67,719 tonnes of sugar to the Maldives for the financial year 2026–27 under a bilateral trade agreement, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
The move is part of a broader decision to allow exports of essential commodities to the island nation, with shipments to remain exempt from any existing or future export restrictions during the year.
The notification, issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, enables India to supply sugar along with other key food items such as rice, wheat flour and onions within specified quotas.
Under the arrangement, sugar exports to the Maldives will be allowed up to 67,719 tonnes during FY27, providing an assured external market for Indian mills at a time when the industry is closely watching export opportunities.
The government has also clarified that shipments of such commodities, including sugar, will be routed only through designated ports if they fall under restricted or prohibited categories. These include major ports such as Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Tuticorin, Kandla and Visakhapatnam, along with ICD Tughlakabad.
The exemption from export restrictions is expected to support steady trade flows and help maintain supply commitments under the India–Maldives agreement.
While the quantity approved for sugar exports is limited, the decision comes amid a tightly balanced domestic market, where production and consumption levels are closely aligned. The additional export window could provide some support to mill liquidity, though its overall impact on domestic availability is expected to remain modest.
The notification forms part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen trade ties with the Maldives while ensuring regulated exports of essential commodities.
