Indonesia : Minister of Agriculture Amran said that rice stocks reached 4.6 million tons, and the increase in soybeans would be discussed with importers.
Indonesia has built a strong rice buffer, with stocks at 4.6–5 million tonnes—potentially a record for April—alongside large standing crops. Authorities say supplies are sufficient for up to 11 months, providing a solid cushion against potential El Niño-driven drought risks.
JAKARTA – Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman said that the national rice stock currently reached 4.6 million tons and had the potential to rise to 5 million tons in April. If that figure is achieved, it is said to be the highest for April.
To reporters, at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 7, Amran said this achievement was far above the conditions of previous years. “Previously, if it was April, it was only 1.5 million tons, a maximum of 2 million tons. That means three times,” said Amran.
He said the reserve was an important cushion or reserve to face the threat of El Nino which could trigger drought for up to six months. According to the Minister of Agriculture, in addition to rice stocks, there are currently 12.5 million tons of standing crops or crops that are still standing in the fields, with about 11 million tons of which are ready to be harvested.
“Total 28 million tons. That’s enough for 10.7 months to 11 months ahead,” he said.
Amran explained that in the experience during El Nino, the need could reach 2 million tons per month. If the drought lasts six months, the need is estimated at around 12 million tons. Therefore, he assessed that the current rice position is very safe. “The most important thing is our most vital staple food, rice, the position is very safe,” he said.
Regarding the increase in soybean prices complained about by tempe producers, Amran has not explained the cause in detail. He admitted that he had just returned from outside the area and would still check the details of the problem.
Even so, he ensured that the government would move. The Ministry of Agriculture, said Amran, will gather importers and ask them not to raise prices too high. “Later we will ask importers not to raise prices too high,” said Amran.
He also said that he would coordinate with the internal ranks of the ministry to prepare control measures. So, for now, Amran’s message emphasizes two things, namely the rice stock is said to be strong, while the government’s soybean problem has just started to clear its backlog.
