Maharashtra: 29 Sugar mills get notices over Rs 1,012 crore cane dues; hearings set for Monday

Maharashtra’s Sugar Commissionerate has issued notices to 29 mills over ₹1,012 crore in unpaid cane dues for 2025–26. With 53 mills paying under 80% of dues, hearings are set for April 13. Authorities warn of interest penalties and recovery action, as delays continue to strain farmers awaiting timely FRP payments.

Pune: The Sugar Commissionerate has issued notices to 29 sugar mills across the state for failing to clear cane payments for the 2025–26 season, with dues amounting to Rs 1,012 crore, Pudhari reported.

Officials said hearings will be held at the Sugar Complex on April 13. Director (Finance) Yashwant Giri confirmed that the mills will be asked to present their side during the proceedings.

The action follows continued complaints from farmers over non-payment of the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP). As of March 31, 2026, 53 sugar mills had paid less than 80 percent of the dues. Hearings for 24 mills have already been completed, while the remaining 29 have now been served notices, Giri said.

Data shows that these 29 mills together owe Rs 3,074.33 crore to farmers. So far, Rs 2,061.89 crore has been deposited into farmers’ bank accounts, leaving Rs 1,012.44 crore still unpaid. Authorities are also expected to review whether any payments have been made after the notices were issued.

District-wise, the mills that have received notices are spread across several regions, including Kolhapur (3), Sangli (2), Solapur (3), Satara (1), Nashik (1), Parbhani (2), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (3), Latur (2), Dharashiv (3), Jalna (1), Nanded (1), Hingoli (1), Pune (1), Nandurbar (1), Ahilyanagar (1), and Beed (2).

Officials said further action will depend on the outcome of the hearings. As per rules, mills must pay farmers within 14 days of receiving cane. Delays can attract 15 percent annual interest, and recovery action can be initiated through revenue authorities if dues remain unpaid.
