Egypt targets 5 mln tons of local wheat procurement to reduce import dependence
Egypt is targeting 5 million tonnes of domestic wheat procurement this season to reduce import dependence. With higher support prices and assured payments, the government aims to boost farmer participation, stabilize supplies, and strengthen food security during the harvest period.
Egypt aims to procure 5 million tons of wheat from local farmers during the текущий harvest season as part of efforts to reduce reliance on imports and ensure the country’s strategic grain needs.
The target was announced during a meeting between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and senior officials, including the prime minister and ministers responsible for agriculture and supply. The discussion focused on preparations for the domestic wheat procurement campaign.
According to official statements, the government will begin accepting wheat from farmers and suppliers on April 15, with the campaign running through August 15. The goal is to ensure a smooth procurement process and stable supply to the domestic market.
To support farmers, the procurement price has been increased to 2,500 Egyptian pounds per ardeb, with prompt payments guaranteed. This measure is expected to encourage producers to sell more wheat to the state and help stabilize the market.
