MoU signed to find new sugarcane varieties
Coimbatore: ICAR Sugarcane Breeding Institute and the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), New Delhi, signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday to identify location specific and climate-resilient sugarcane varieties for tropical and sub-tropical regions.
The MoU was signed on the ICAR-SBI premises in the presence of Aditya Jhunjhunwala, president of ISMA and G Hemaprabha, director of ICAR-SBI. Jhunjhunwala said the project will help in identifying varieties with better yields that would benefit the farmers. Stating that investment in research and development in the sugarcane sector is meagre in the country, he felt that similar projects would help the sugar industry in meeting the needs of the country. G Hemaprabha said it is for the first time a project of this magnitude is being taken up by the ICAR-SBI with the support of ISMA. The project involves the evaluation of elite sugarcane clones in the various sugar mills located in different zones of the country with an objective to achieve a cane yield of 100 tonnes/ha and sugar recovery of about 11.5%.tnn
