UNICA: Brazilian ethanol production expands in April

Brazil’s south-central region processed 40.06 million tonnes of sugarcane in late April, boosting ethanol output to 2.04 billion litres. Corn ethanol production rose 9.4% year-on-year to 392.5 million litres, while total ethanol production since April 1 surged 71.8% to 3.29 billion litres.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced ethanol production continued to trend higher during the second half of April. Corn ethanol production was up more than 9% when compared to the same period of last year.

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 40.06 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of April, up from 17.96 million metric tons processed during the same time of last year. Sugarcane processing since the start of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 60.46 million metric tons.

According to UNICA, 238 biorefineries were operating as of the end of April, including 219 that exclusively process sugarcane, 10 corn ethanol facilities, and nine facilities that can process both feedstocks.

Mills in region produced 2.04 billion liters (538.91 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of April, including 1.41 billion liters of hydrous ethanol and 628.64 million liters of anhydrous ethanol. Corn ethanol accounted for 392.48 million liters, or 19.25% of total production during the period, up 9.37% when compared to the same period of 2025.

Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 3.29 billion liters, up 71.84% when compared to the same period of last year. Production included 2.3 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 58.47%, and 982.88 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 110.07%. Corn ethanol accounted for 804.42 million liters of production, up 12.21%.

Mills in the south-central region sold 2.74 billion liters of ethanol in April, including 1.76 billion liters of hydrous ethanol and 985.68 million liters of anhydrous ethanol.
