Centre likely to decide on sugar sector issues by June 10, says Dilip Walse Patil

Dilip Walse Patil said the Centre is expected to decide on key sugar industry and onion issues by June 10, following discussions involving Sharad Pawar and assurances from Amit Shah after recent meetings with state and central leaders.

Senior Nationalist Congress Party leader and MLA Dilip Walse Patil on Thursday said that the Central Government is expected to take decisions by June 10 to address the concerns of the sugar industry.

Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s state office, Walse Patil said discussions on these issues were held earlier in the day during his meeting with veteran leader Sharad Pawar at Pawar’s residence, Silver Oak, Agrowon reported.

Clarifying the nature of the meeting, Walse Patil said it was not political. He said the discussions focused on three key subjects – challenges faced by the sugar industry, issues affecting farmers.

He noted that Sharad Pawar has worked on farmers’ issues for many years. Walse Patil said that because of Pawar’s health-related limitations in recent years, leadership in the cooperative and agriculture sectors had been carried forward by Ajit Pawar, while they continued to represent the interests of farmers, the cooperative movement and common citizens by raising their concerns before the appropriate authorities.

According to Walse Patil, the meeting also reviewed the situation of onion prices in Maharashtra and the challenges likely to face the sugar sector during the upcoming crushing season.

He informed Pawar about the recent meeting attended by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Pralhad Joshi, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. He also briefed him on the discussions held by the delegation led by Chief Minister Fadnavis.

Walse Patil said Pawar was consulted on whether any additional issues should be raised with the Centre beyond those already discussed by the state delegation.

He added that Union minister Amit Shah had assured that decisions regarding onion-related concerns and issues affecting the sugar industry would be taken within ten days. Walse Patil said that swift developments were currently taking place at the Centre on both matters and that this information was also shared with Pawar.

“When public issues are involved, our discussions are not political,” Walse Patil said.
