US-Iran conflict hits rice exports from Karnal-Haryana

The reported conflict-related disruption involving Iran is affecting basmati rice exports from Karnal, with an estimated 60,000–70,000 tonnes of rice stranded at ports, about half belonging to Karnal exporters. New orders have slowed, shipping delays are raising costs, and stocks are accumulating at transit hubs such as United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The US-Iran war is adversely impacting the rice exports, particularly from Karnal, widely known as the “Rice Bowl of India”. Exporters, who have long depended on Iran as one of the biggest markets for basmati, are facing uncertainty as shipping routes remain disrupted.

As per exporters, a large number of consignments meant for Iran and some other Middle East countries are stranded at various ports, while fresh orders have stopped. Stocks are piling up at ports, and shipments in transit are facing delays, leading to a rise in costs. As per an estimate, 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes of rice are stranded at various ports. Of this, nearly 50 per cent belong to exporters from Karnal district. “Packaging and dispatch operations for new orders have been severely affected as exporters are unable to dispatch consignments. Rice shipments are stranded at ports in Dubai, Oman, and other transit hubs,”said Satish Goel, president of the All India Rice Exporters Association.
