The government proposed reducing withholding tax to a uniform 0.5% on 60 essential commodities, including sugar, rice, onion, edible oil and agricultural products, in the FY2026-27 budget. Finance Minister Amir Khosru said the move aims to ease consumer pressure from rising prices.

The government has proposed tax relief on 60 essential commodities in the FY2026-27 national budget, with sugar, rice and onion among the key items set to benefit from lower withholding tax rates.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the proposal while presenting the Tk 9.38 lakh crore national budget in parliament on Thursday.

In his budget speech, the minister said withholding tax on a wide range of essential agricultural and consumer products, including paddy, rice, wheat, potatoes, livestock, poultry, fish, onion, garlic, ginger, salt, sugar, edible oil and seeds, would be reduced to a uniform 0.5 per cent from existing rates of 5 per cent, 2 per cent and 1 per cent.

He said the measure was designed to provide relief to consumers and improve affordability of daily necessities.

“Over the past years, runaway price hikes of essential goods have placed immense pressure on people’s lives. In line with the democratic government’s electoral commitment, this initiative is expected to bring relief to the public,” the finance minister said.
