Haryana govt not procuring moong, maize at MSP: Surjewala

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala accused the Haryana government of failing to procure moong and maize at MSP, forcing farmers to sell below support prices. He also alleged fertilizer shortages during kharif sowing and demanded immediate corrective measures to support farmers.

Chandigarh: Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala on Friday accused the Haryana govt of failing to ensure procurement of moong and maize at the minimum support price (MSP), alleging that farmers are being forced to sell their produce far below the notified rates.

Surjewala alleged despite the Centre fixing the MSP of moong at Rs 8,682 per quintal, farmers in Haryana are selling the crop to private traders for around Rs 6,000 per quintal due to negligible govt procurement. Similarly, he alleged that maize, with an MSP of Rs 2,410 per quintal, is fetching only about Rs 1,100 per quintal in mandis.

Calling the BJP’s claim of procuring 24 crops at MSP a “cruel joke,” Surjewala said there was no effective procurement mechanism for moong and maize at the start of the marketing season.

He also alleged that farmers across the state were struggling to obtain DAP and urea during the ongoing kharif sowing season, claiming that inadequate supplies and digital verification procedures were aggravating the crisis.

The Congress leader demanded immediate procurement of moong and maize at MSP, adequate fertiliser supply in all districts, and warned of protests if corrective measures were not taken.
