India: Rice export prices hit nearly 10-month high on tight paddy supplies
Asian rice export prices remained firm as India’s prices reached a 10-month high on tight paddy supplies and monsoon concerns. Thailand also recorded gains, Bangladesh faced weather-related supply shortages, while Vietnam’s prices declined amid increased harvest supplies and weaker demand.
Indian rice export prices rose to a near 10-month high in the week ended 24 July 2026, supported by tight paddy supplies and concerns over the new-season crop following patchy monsoon rainfall. Adverse weather conditions across major Asian rice-producing countries also kept traders cautious.
India’s 5% broken parboiled rice was quoted at $356-361/tonne (t), up from $352-357/t last week. 5% broken white rice was offered at $355-360/t. According to traders, limited paddy availability pushed up procurement costs, prompting exporters to increase their offer prices.
Weather, supply conditions shape Asian rice markets
Thailand’s 5% broken rice was quoted at $450-460/t, slightly higher than $445-450/t a week earlier. Traders attributed the increase to domestic factors while noting that purchases were largely limited to regular buyers, with spot demand remaining weak. Market participants also expressed concerns over upcoming crop yields, while another trader said supply conditions are expected to become clearer next month.
In Bangladesh, domestic rice prices increased over the past week, particularly for fine rice varieties, amid tightening supplies following successive weather-related disruptions. Traders cited higher paddy prices and recent flooding that affected crops across 28,610 hectares in 12 districts, including paddy fields and rice seedbeds. Earlier this year, heavy pre-monsoon rainfall and upstream water inflows damaged the country’s summer rice crop in the northeastern wetlands, resulting in an estimated production shortfall of more than 200,000 t.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at $430/t, down from $445-450/t last week, as supplies increased with the ongoing summer-autumn harvest. A trader in Ho Chi Minh City said around one-third of the summer-autumn crop has been harvested. Traders in Hanoi also noted that the Philippines has tightened oversight of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances for Vietnamese rice shipments. Vietnam exported 274,749 t of rice during the first half of July, taking cumulative exports to 5.3 million tonnes (mnt) as of 15 July.
Outlook
Rice export prices across major Asian origins are expected to remain firm to slightly higher in the near term, supported by tight paddy availability in several exporting countries and cautious farmer selling ahead of new-season harvests. However, fresh arrivals from upcoming harvests, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, could ease supply pressure later in the quarter, limiting further price gains. Export demand and weather developments will remain key drivers of market direction.
