China cuts vegetable oil imports by 15%
China’s vegetable oil imports fell 14.9% year-on-year to 2.7 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, mainly due to lower soybean oil inflows. Reduced imports are raising concerns over tighter domestic supplies and supporting spot vegetable oil and palm oil prices in China.
China imported 2.7 mln tons of vegetable oils in the first half of 2026, down 14.9% from the same period last year, according to Chinese customs data.
One of the main factors behind the overall decline was lower soybean oil imports. Reduced inflows from abroad have strengthened expectations of tighter vegetable oil supplies in China’s domestic market, providing support to spot prices.
Palm oil also remains one of China’s major vegetable oil imports. Against the backdrop of lower overall imports, market participants expect tighter domestic supplies, which is also providing support to palm oil prices in China.
