Some Brazilian sugar shipments could reach India before October 15, though the quantity remains uncertain. Some sugar shipments could reach Indian ports before October 15, but the quantity that will arrive remains uncertain, National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) president Prakash Naiknavare said on Sunday, The Pioneer reported.
Brazil is currently the only viable source for India’s planned sugar imports, as Thailand, another traditional supplier, is facing a domestic supply shortfall, Naiknavare said.
Sugar cargoes from Brazil typically take 40-45 days to reach Indian ports. Additional time is required to transport the imported sugar from ports to mills, making it difficult to estimate how much could reach the domestic market before October 15, he said.
“It is difficult to put a number on how much can arrive before October 15, but the possibility of some shipments arriving by then is good,” Naiknavare said.
His comments come as the government’s measures to curb hoarding have started easing sugar prices in the domestic market. The Centre has tightened stockholding rules in an effort to improve availability and contain the recent surge in prices.
