Brazil’s Center-South sugar output falls 7.9% in early August despite higher cane crush
Brazil’s Center-South sugar production fell 7.9% year-on-year to 3.31 million metric tonnes in early August, despite a 2% increase in sugarcane crushing to 48.39 million tonnes. Meanwhile, ethanol output rose 6% to 2.34 billion liters, driven by corn ethanol and diverted sugarcane.
Sao Paulo: Sugar production in Brazil’s key Center-South region declined 7.9% year-on-year to 3.31 million metric tonnes in the first half of August, even as sugar mills processed more cane than they did during the same period last year, Market Screener reported, citing data released by the country’s Agriculture Ministry on Thursday.
Sugarcane crushing rose 2% from a year earlier to 48.39 million tonnes during the period.
Meanwhile, ethanol production increased 6% year-on-year to 2.34 billion litres. The rise was supported by a larger proportion of sugarcane being diverted towards biofuel production, along with higher output of corn-based ethanol.
