Indonesia plans to establish its own palm oil price benchmark

Indonesia plans to launch a new commodity exchange in early 2027 with mandatory trading for key exports like palm oil to strengthen domestic pricing and export duty calculations. While Bursa Malaysia remains the primary global benchmark, Indonesia’s platform could eventually alter trade flows and gain international market influence.

Indonesia plans to launch a new commodity exchange in early 2027 that is expected to play a greater role in pricing the country’s key export commodities, including palm oil. Trading of relevant commodities through the new platform is planned to become mandatory.

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer and exporter of palm oil, but futures traded on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives remain the main international price benchmark for the market. In 2025, Malaysian CPO futures trading was equivalent to 490.43 mln tons, compared with only about 152 thsd tons traded on the Indonesian market.

The large gap reflects the Malaysian market’s much deeper liquidity, broad participation of international traders and a price discovery system built over decades. Analysts therefore expect Indonesia’s exchange to initially serve mainly as a domestic price reference, including for calculating export duties.

At the same time, mandatory trading through the new platform could affect palm oil trade flows. If prices in Indonesia differ significantly from international quotations, buyers could adjust their purchases or partially shift to alternative suppliers.

Market participants expect Malaysian CPO futures to retain their position as the main global price benchmark in the near term. However, the development of Indonesia’s own exchange could gradually increase its role in price discovery on the global palm oil market.
