Karnataka : Crops destroyed in 1.93 lakh hectares, yet Vijayanagar district not drought-hit
Vijayanagar district faces severe crop losses, with an estimated 1.93 lakh hectares—90% of kharif acreage—affected by inadequate rainfall. Maize, hybrid jowar, sunflower, groundnut, onion and ragi are suffering. Despite drought conditions across all six taluks, none were included in the first drought-hit list, with farmers awaiting the second list.
Hosapete: Even as the farmers of Vijayanagar district are livid over the government not including all six taluks of the district in the drought-hit list, though the district received the lowest rainfall this year, it is estimated that crops may have been destroyed on 1.93 lakh hectares of land.
Primarily, crops like maize, hybrid jowar, sunflower, groundnut, onion and ragi are dying across the district, as per the ground truthing survey. Even though the seeds have sprouted, lack of rain during the formation of pulses has left the district drought-hit.
It is estimated that crops on 1,93,088 hectares in the district are destroyed, as per a report submitted. This, it must be noted, covers 90% of kharif sowing,” said Agriculture Department Joint Director D T Manjunath.
“To declare a taluk as drought-hit, there would be many parameters. The report may have taken note of the satellite-based survey, rain in Kudligi and Kottur during August.
Second list
“Therefore, the six taluks have not been found in the drought-hit list. However, we had reported that all the taluks in the district were reeling under drought. We are hoping that this would be considered during the second list expected to be announced soon,” the officer added.
There would be separate relief for drought and the relief amount has not yet been finalised this year, said sources in Agriculture Department.
