Ukraine could face storage shortage for over 9 mln tons of grain by October – EU
Ukraine could face a grain storage shortage exceeding 9 million tonnes by October as exports halve amid attacks on Black Sea infrastructure. The EU is expanding storage, financial and transport support, warning prolonged disruptions could affect global grain supplies and prices.
By October, Ukraine could face a shortage of crop storage capacity, leaving more than 9 mln tons of grain without adequate storage, according to the EU Delegation to Ukraine. Limited export capacity is also worsening farmers’ financial position ahead of planting for next year’s crop.
According to the EU, Ukraine’s grain exports have halved compared with last year amid attacks on ports, shipping routes and agricultural infrastructure. The Black Sea remains particularly important, handling around 90% of Ukraine’s agricultural exports.
Alternative routes through the EU’s Solidarity Lanes are helping to maintain Ukrainian exports but cannot fully replace maritime shipments. The EU stressed that Ukraine needs safe and reliable access to Black Sea ports to ensure stable agricultural exports.
As harvested grain accumulates, the EU is focusing on providing Ukraine with additional grain storage capacity, financial support for farmers and more efficient cross-border transport. These measures are intended to reduce the risk of crop losses and support the continued operation of agricultural businesses.
The EU warns that prolonged export and storage constraints could also affect global food markets. Ukraine remains a major supplier of grains and oilseeds, meaning restrictions on its exports could affect food availability and prices on international markets.
