Zambia secures 540,000-metric-ton maize export deal with Kenya
Zambia plans to export 540,000 tonnes of white non-GMO maize to Kenya in six batches, as Kenya faces reduced production. Zambia says stocks are sufficient, while Kenya is considering duty-free imports of up to 3 million tonnes to strengthen supplies.
Zambia plans to export 540,000 metric tons of maize to Kenya, the government said on Wednesday, as the East African nation looks to boost supplies after white maize production fell to a seven-year low.
– In a statement, Zambia’s Ministry of Information and Media said the export deal was signed between the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) and Kenya’s Baita Trading Company Limited.
– The 540,000-ton contract of white Grade A non-GMO maize will be delivered in six batches, with 100,000 tons shipped every three months and a final shipment of 40,000 tons, the statement said.
– The government said Zambia had sufficient maize stocks following a sharp increase in production, while it has secured several export opportunities with a number of countries within the region.
– Kenya is considering duty-free imports of 3 million tons of white maize, according to a post on X by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development.
