Pakistan’s Rice Exports Hit Record 655,000 Tonnes in Just Two Months

Pakistan’s rice exports rose 20% year-on-year to a record 655,000 tonnes in July-August FY2027, earning $392 million. Basmati shipments surged 43%, supported by higher rice acreage, improved water availability and stronger farm economics, according to AHL.

Pakistan’s rice export volumes rose 20% year-on-year (YoY) to a record 655,000 tonnes in the first two months of FY2027. Export earnings also increased 25% to $392 million, according to data compiled by Arif Habib Limited (AHL).

Basmati rice led the growth during July and August. Shipments jumped 43% YoY to 146,000 tonnes from 102,000 tonnes a year earlier.

Meanwhile, exports of other rice varieties increased 15% to 509,000 tonnes from 443,000 tonnes.

In value terms, Basmati exports climbed 53% to $164 million during 2MFY27. They stood at $107 million in the same period last year.

At the same time, earnings from other rice exports rose 10% to $228 million from $207 million.

As a result, rice contributed 7.1% of Pakistan’s total exports during the two-month period. Its share stood at 6.2% a year earlier.

Basmati rice accounted for 3% of total exports, up from 2.1%. However, other rice maintained its 4.1% share.

Pakistan’s overall exports reached $5.504 billion during 2MFY27. They increased 8% from $5.102 billion in the corresponding period of FY2026.

The growth also continued in August. Rice export volumes rose 22% YoY to 308,000 tonnes from 252,000 tonnes.

However, shipments fell 27% month-on-month from 346,000 tonnes in July.

Basmati exports recorded stronger growth in August. Volumes jumped 58% YoY to 78,000 tonnes from 49,000 tonnes.

Other rice shipments also increased 14% to 231,000 tonnes from 203,000 tonnes.

Rice export earnings grew even faster during the month. They rose 31% YoY to $192 million from $146 million.

Basmati earnings surged 70% to $88 million from $52 million. Meanwhile, earnings from other rice increased 10% to $104 million from $95 million.

Consequently, rice accounted for 7.5% of Pakistan’s total exports in August. Its share stood at 6.1% a year earlier.

Basmati alone contributed 3.4% of total exports in August. Its share had stood at 2.1% in August 2025.

Other rice accounted for 4.1% of exports, compared with 3.9% a year earlier.

Pakistan’s overall exports reached $2.542 billion in August. They increased 5% YoY from $2.417 billion.

However, exports declined 18% from $2.962 billion in July.

According to AHL, rice exports have recovered after the market adjusted following India’s decision to lift its non-Basmati rice export ban.

The brokerage attributed the recovery to several factors. Farmers increased rice acreage as cotton returns weakened.

Moreover, better water availability supported rice production. Higher solarisation also improved farm economics, according to AHL.

These factors helped strengthen Pakistan’s rice exports during the opening months of FY2027.
