Brazil to convert used palm oil into clean energy
Salvador, Bahia has launched a project with Petrobras and food vendors to collect used palm oil for clean-energy production. The initiative could process up to 6 million litres annually, reduce pollution and provide vendors with incentives for recycling used cooking oil.
A project has been launched in Salvador, Bahia, to collect and convert used palm oil into clean energy. The initiative brings together the city authorities, Petrobras and local food vendors.
Previously, used oil was often poured into drains, contributing to pollution of urban infrastructure and coastal areas. It will now be collected centrally, with potential processing volumes estimated at up to 6 mln liters per year.
Palm oil, known in Brazil as azeite de dendê, is widely used in Bahia’s traditional cuisine. In Salvador alone, more than 3.5 thsd women sell acarajé, a local dish that relies heavily on the oil.
To encourage participation, the city offers incentives and licenses to businesses adopting more sustainable practices. Vendors receive 3 Brazilian reais for every liter of used oil collected, while some cooperatives also provide soap made from recycled feedstock.
The project is expected to reduce pollution, create an additional feedstock source for energy production and establish a new disposal channel for used vegetable oil.
