Brazil may harvest its largest first corn crop in 13 years
Brazil’s corn production may rise 2.8% to 148 million tonnes in MY 2026/27, driven by strong domestic ethanol demand. First-crop acreage could expand 10.7% to 4.54 million ha, while safrinha area may reach 18.48 million ha and exports 46 million tonnes.
Brazilian farmers are expanding corn acreage in the MY 2026/27 amid strong domestic demand, particularly from ethanol producers. According to Conab, total corn production in the country may rise to 148 mln tons, up 2.8% from the previous season.
The largest increase is expected in first-crop corn acreage, which may expand by 10.7% to 4.54 mln ha. Production is forecast at 32.1 mln tons, potentially the highest level in 13 years.
The area planted with second-crop corn, or safrinha, which accounts for the bulk of Brazil’s corn production, may increase by 3.7% to 18.48 mln ha. This could result in output of around 113.2 mln tons.
Higher supply will be supported not only by domestic consumption but also by strong demand on export markets. Brazil’s corn exports in MY 2026/27 may reach 46 mln tons, reinforcing the country’s position among the world’s leading grain suppliers.
