Egypt’s wheat imports fell 77% in September

Egypt’s wheat imports fell 76.6% year-on-year to 362,500 tonnes in September, with GASC receiving none, as prices rose amid Black Sea disruptions. Russia supplied 39.4%, Ukraine 36.6%, Romania 15.4% and Canada 8.7%. Despite September’s slowdown, January–September imports increased 1.9% to 9.026 million tonnes.

Egypt imported 362.5 thsd tons of wheat in September, down 76.6% from 1.548 mln tons in September 2025. The state grain buyer GASC did not receive any wheat shipments during the month.

The sharp decline in purchases was mainly driven by higher global wheat prices amid disruptions to Black Sea supplies. According to market participants, prices have risen from around $245/t in early July to about $320/t.

Russia remained Egypt’s largest wheat supplier in September with 142.7 thsd tons, accounting for 39.4% of imports. Ukraine supplied 132.8 thsd tons, or 36.6%, followed by Romania with 55.7 thsd tons and Canada with 31.4 thsd tons.

A stronger US dollar against the Egyptian pound and caution among private importers are also weighing on purchases. Some buyers are concerned that an easing of tensions in the Black Sea could trigger a rapid decline in global prices, leaving them with high-priced inventories.

At the same time, Egypt’s total wheat imports in January–September were still up 1.9% y/y at 9.026 mln tons. This suggests that the September decline was more of a sharp pause in buying amid high prices than a broader reduction in the country’s import needs.
