Kazakhstan exports a record 8.8 mln tons of wheat in the marketing year
Kazakhstan’s wheat exports reached a record 8.87 million tonnes in the latest marketing year, up 16.2%, driven by Central Asian demand. Uzbekistan accounted for 60.8% of shipments, while exports to Afghanistan, Turkey and Iran surged. Meanwhile, Russian wheat imports increased 4.2-fold to 2.09 million tonnes.
Kazakhstan exported 8.87 mln tons of soft and durum wheat in the past marketing year, up 16.2% from the previous season and the highest level on record. In August, shipments reached 567.3 thsd tons excluding EAEU countries, up 15.7% from July and 23% y/y.
Central Asian countries remained the main destination, taking 6.98 mln tons of wheat. Their share in Kazakhstan’s total wheat exports increased to 78.7% from 70.6% in the previous season. Uzbekistan alone accounted for 60.8% of shipments, up from 49.6% a year earlier.
Wheat exports to Uzbekistan rose 42%, while shipments to Afghanistan increased 2.6-fold, to Turkey 27-fold and to Iran 617-fold. Deliveries to Russia, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands also increased significantly. Kazakhstan also resumed or opened wheat shipments to France and Tunisia.
At the same time, exports to several destinations declined. Shipments to China fell 4.14-fold to 43.2 thsd tons, although this was offset by a 65% increase in feed flour exports, equivalent to 1.43 mln tons. Wheat shipments to Egypt, Vietnam and Morocco also fell to zero.
Alongside record exports, Kazakhstan sharply increased imports of Russian wheat. According to Russian sources, imports reached 2.09 mln tons in September–August, 4.2 times higher than a season earlier. Strong demand for Kazakh wheat from Central Asia and Afghanistan persisted throughout the marketing year.
