India sugar production view slashed as El Nino hits, USDA says

India’s 2026/27 sugar production forecast was cut to 29.5 million tonnes from 33.6 million tonnes, according to the USDA. A severe rainfall deficit is expected to reduce sugarcane output to 434 million tonnes, lower sucrose content and effective harvesting area, while drought threatens early-2027 milling operations.

Total sugarcane crop projected at 434 million tons from 455 million tons the previous season, said the USDA

“A growing water shortage poses a significant risk to sugar mill operations, as drought-like conditions are expected to complicate milling in early 2027.
