Ukraine’s sugar beet area may increase by 10–15% in 2027
Ukraine’s sugar beet planting area could rise 10–15% in 2027 as improving sugar prices, processing capacity and limited grain export opportunities encourage farmers to expand cultivation. Growth is expected mainly in central and western regions, potentially replacing winter wheat and corn, subject to profitability, logistics and weather conditions.
Sugar beet planting area in Ukraine could increase by 10–15% in 2027, supported by a gradual recovery in sugar prices, sufficient processing capacity, and access to sales markets. According to industry estimates, farmers are considering expanding sugar beet cultivation, although no substantial increase is expected. Final planting decisions will depend on production profitability, logistics costs, weather conditions, and farmers’ financial resources.
According to Yevhenii Stanko, regional manager at Betaseed, sugar prices will remain the key factor influencing growers’ decisions. If the market’s positive trend continues, farmers will have an incentive to expand sugar beet acreage. At the same time, the availability of sufficient processing capacity provides opportunities for production growth, although the expansion is expected to remain gradual.
The Seed Association of Ukraine also expects a moderate increase in sugar beet planting area in 2027. One of the main drivers will be limited grain export opportunities, prompting farmers to reconsider their crop mix in favor of more profitable alternatives. Oilseeds, soybeans, and sugar beet are expected to remain among the priority crops. According to the association’s executive director, Suzanna Hryhorenko, sugar beet expansion will mainly come at the expense of winter wheat and corn acreage.
Central and western regions of Ukraine have the greatest potential for expanding sugar beet production, as they are home to major sugar factories, established logistics infrastructure, and favorable soil and climatic conditions. Proximity to processing facilities remains an important factor in the economic efficiency of sugar beet cultivation, helping reduce raw material transportation costs and ensure reliable sales channels.
Vinnytsia region remains Ukraine’s leading sugar beet-producing area, accounting for around 20% of the country’s total planted area in 2026. Other major producing regions include Khmelnytskyi, Poltava, Lviv, Ternopil, Rivne, Cherkasy, and Kyiv. These regions are expected to account for most of the potential acreage expansion in 2027, while the industry’s overall outlook will primarily depend on sugar market conditions and production profitability.
