Turkey’s grain harvest hits record 44.8 mln tons in 2026/27
Turkey’s 2026/27 grain harvest reached a record 44.8 million tonnes, up 10.5 million tonnes year over year, driven by higher wheat and barley output. The bumper crop could reduce import demand, with USDA revising wheat imports down to 2.8 million tonnes, although corn import estimates increased to 4.8 million tonnes.
Turkey’s total grain harvest reached a record 44.8 mln tons in the 2026/27 season, up 10.5 mln tons from a year earlier. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, wheat and barley accounted for the largest increases in production, while the corn harvest declined slightly. The substantial expansion in domestic grain supplies could significantly reduce the country’s import requirements.
Turkey’s wheat production is estimated at 24.75 mln tons, an increase of 6.8 mln tons compared with the previous season. Barley output rose by 4 mln tons to 10 mln tons, while corn production declined by 400 thsd tons to 8.1 mln tons.
However, the official Turkish figures are significantly higher than estimates from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The agency had forecast Turkey’s wheat production at 23 mln tons, barley output at 8.8 mln tons and corn production at 7.4 mln tons. The differences between these estimates create uncertainty over actual domestic grain supplies and future import demand.
According to USDA’s October forecast, Turkey’s wheat imports in 2026/27 were expected to decline from 6.3 mln to 4.5 mln tons, corn imports from 6.1 mln to 4.5 mln tons, and barley imports from 1.4 mln to 150 thsd tons. Meanwhile, a more recent FAS USDA report further reduced the wheat import forecast to 2.8 mln tons, while raising the corn import estimate to 4.8 mln tons. The barley import forecast remained unchanged.
