Farmers protesting for last 2 mnths over pending cane dues of Rs 250 cr

AGRA: Thousands of farmers in Muzaffarnagar’s Budhana area warned of massive protests on August 11 if the pending sugarcane dues are not cleared soon. Notably, a number of farmers and BU workers have been on sit-on protests in front of Bajaj Sugar Mill (Bajaj Hindustan Sugar itd.) in the Bhaisana area of Budhana for the last two months.
On Thursday BKU’s district president, Yogesh Sharma said, “Farmers in the area will not supply sugarcane to Bajaj Sugar Mill in future and sugarcane from the area should be allotted to other sugar mills.” Speaking about pending dues of farmers, who supplied sugarcane to the mill, the district sugarcane officer, Sanjay Sisodia told TOI, “The Bajaj Sugar Mill in Bhaisana has to pay sugarcane dues around Rs 250 crores, farmers are on a dharma, we are still in touch with farmers and management of the sugar mill.”
As per Sharma, as many as 17,000 farmers in the Budhana area have been affected by non-payment of their dues. BKU national press spokesperson Arjun Balyan said, “If the management of Bajaj Sugarmil does not solve the issue soon, the Muzaffarnagar administration will face big protests.” “Farmers and BKU workers are sitting on dharna at the main gate of Bajaj Sugar Mill for 65 days. Angered by the payment policy, BKU leaders warned of agitation,” local farmer Ravinder Singh said.
