ADVANTA Partners with Baidyanath Biofuels to Advance India’s Ethanol Blending Goals
ADVANTA and Baidyanath Biofuels have partnered to boost maize-based ethanol production in India, supporting the 20% ethanol blending goal by 2025-26. The collaboration enhances yields, provides farmer training, and promotes sustainable agriculture. Baidyanath’s 250 KLPD Nagpur plant will use ADVANTA’s high-starch maize hybrids, improving ethanol output while reducing reliance on grain imports.
ADVANTA and Baidyanath Biofuels Private Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate to source ADVANTA’s high-quality maize hybrids for bioethanol production. This partnership represents a significant step toward realizing India’s National Biofuels Policy goals of achieving 20% ethanol blending with petrol by 2025-26. The MOU was signed on 15th July 2024, followed by a visit on 13th August 2024 to Baidyanath’s state-of-the-art 250 KLPD Grain-Based Ethanol Plant located at Butibori Industrial Area in Nagpur.
This collaboration leverages ADVANTA’s expertise in high-yield maize hybrids and Baidyanath’s ethanol production capabilities. Initial trials have demonstrated that ADVANTA maize significantly boosts ethanol yield, paving the way for commercial-scale implementation. ADVANTA will also support maize farmers within a 50-100 km radius of the distillery by:
The collaboration is guided by India’s National Policy on Biofuels, which prioritizes sustainable feedstocks for bioethanol production to address growing energy needs. Key objectives of this initiative include:
- Boosting Ethanol Production: Enhancing maize-based ethanol supply by increasing maize yields and ensuring availability.
- Capacity Building: Empowering farmers with knowledge of best practices, agronomic techniques, and market access.
- Improving Stakeholder Linkages: Creating an integrated ecosystem from farm to distillery for seamless production and supply.
- Promoting High-Yield Maize Hybrids: Supporting sustainable practices through the use of Advanta’s genetically superior maize seeds with high starch content, essential for ethanol yield.
Bhupen Dubey, CEO, ADVANTA said “We aim to implement Just-In-Time (JIT) strategies and digitalize processes by deploying custom ag-tech solutions. This will provide Baidyanath with a comprehensive dashboard for monitoring corn production and delivery timelines.
Prashant Belgamwar, Regional Head – Asia & Africa, ADVANTA said “Mapping the surrounding catchment areas of Baidyanath’s plant and conducting a baseline study of crop economics will help optimize maize adoption. This initiative not only addresses India’s ethanol goals but also boosts rural incomes and promotes sustainable agriculture.”
Shishir Saxena, Sub Regional Head of Field Crops and Forages – South Asia said “ADVANTA will take initiatives to setup corn demos plots in the catchment areas to promote corn crop adoption in the target area to benefit the distilleries and reduce transportation costs”.
Abhishek Jha, CEO Baidyanath Biofuels said we have tested ADVANTA in our pilots and seen the benefit of having ADVANTA’s genetically superior maize seeds with high starch content to have higher ethanol yield. Grain ethanol manufacturers are not in favor of grain import since it is counterproductive to the indigenous ethanol manufacturing push in India. He stressed on the importance of ensuring correct moisture of the grains which is supported by ADVANTA’s varieties tight husk cover.
