Hyderabad: A total of 16 different crop varieties released by Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) have recently been officially recognised as notified varieties by the Centre.
Consequently, seed production plans will be developed through the Ministry of Agriculture to make these varieties available to farmers. In this context, university officials suggest that various seed companies in the state should contact the varsity for the supply of these foundation seeds.
Meanwhile, the university has also released five leading maize hybrid varieties at a recent All India Maize Research Coordination meeting held in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, under the auspices of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
Professor Aldas Janaiah, vice-chancellor of the university, announced that the institution has developed five superior maize hybrid varieties.
The newly released hybrids are Deccan Hybrid Maize (DHM) 144, DHM 182, DHM 193, DHM 206, and DHM 218, bringing the total number of maize hybrid varieties released by the university to 24.
DHM 144 (Telangana Maize – 6) is noted for its high starch content, making it suitable for ethanol production. DHM 206 (Telangana Maize – 3) is well-suited for dryland farming and is resistant to drought. Research indicates that DHM is superior in all respects when compared to other available maize varieties.
