Andhra Pradesh : John Cockerill Secures Electrolyser Order from AM Green for India’s Largest Green Ammonia Project
AM Green has partnered with John Cockerill to deploy 1.3 GW of advanced electrolysers at a green ammonia facility in Kakinada, India, set for late 2026 operations. This project, AM Green’s largest to date, will generate one million tonnes of green ammonia annually. Additionally, the two companies are building India’s largest electrolyser manufacturing plant to support domestic green hydrogen initiatives, aligned with India’s Green Hydrogen Mission
AM Green announced a significant partnership with John Cockerill on Wednesday, securing a deal for 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of advanced pressurized alkaline electrolysers for a green ammonia facility at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. This project, which AM Green states is India’s largest electrolyser order, reached its final investment decision (FID) in August 2024 and aims to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia annually.
Set to begin operations in the latter half of 2026, the plant will integrate 1.3 GW of electrolysers in two 640-megawatt (MW) phases, enabling the production of green hydrogen that will then be converted into green ammonia. AM Green highlighted that this order advances its strategic partnership with John Cockerill, aiming to create a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem across India.
Additionally, John Cockerill and AM Green are developing India’s largest electrolyser manufacturing plant, with a capacity of 2 GW annually, in Kakinada. This facility will supply electrolysers for the second 640 MW phase of the Kakinada green ammonia project, aligning with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission targets.
AM Green’s multiple green ammonia production sites across India will help the company achieve 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia capacity by 2030, supporting net-zero goals for India and OECD markets. This output will equate to around 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, fulfilling 20% of India’s green hydrogen target and 10% of Europe’s green hydrogen import target.
The Kakinada facility has received CertifHy certification, meeting EU RFNBO standards for green ammonia production. AM Green has secured major off-take agreements for this project to cater to a wide array of green hydrogen applications.
Anil Chalamalasetty, AM Green’s Group Chairman, noted, “This collaboration positions India as a key exporter of low-cost, high-standard green molecules. Our efforts not only contribute to India’s green hydrogen vision but also support decarbonization across global industries, including refining, shipping, fertilizers, power, and chemicals.”
John Cockerill’s joint venture with Technip Energies, Rely, will manage engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPsCm) for the entire project. John Cockerill CEO François Michel emphasized that “This order is pivotal for our hydrogen business. Our electrolysis technology will drive the widespread adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives in this region and beyond.”
John Cockerill, backed by public support in India, the USA, Belgium, and France, is committed to establishing local green hydrogen ecosystems. Vivek Bhide, John Cockerill India President, added that the company aims to expand in India’s growing steel and hydrogen markets, where it is already recognized as a key technology partner by leading steel producers like Tata Steel, JSW Steel, AM/NS India, and JSOL.
