Area under sugarcane cultivation in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region expected to go down: Report
In Maharashtra’s Marathwada region, sugarcane cultivation is expected to decline this year. Data shows a decrease from 2 lakh to 1.42 lakh hectares in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and from 1.41 lakh to 1.25 lakh hectares in Nanded. Overall, the state’s sugarcane area has dropped from 14.02 lakh to 11.67 lakh hectares. The final figures will depend on future rainfall.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The data collected by the agriculture department suggests that the area under sugarcane cultivation in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra is likely to decline this year, reports PTI.
The Maharashtra Sugar Commissioner’s office has analyzed the agriculture department’s findings on sugarcane plantations based on rainfall recorded up to July 31st. The data covers the commissioner’s office’s two divisions (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nanded), encompassing eight districts in Marathwada.
According to Maharashtra Sugar Commissioner Kunal Khemnar, “Typically, sugarcane is cultivated across approximately 2 lakh hectares in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division. However, current estimates indicate a potential cultivation area of around 1.42 lakh hectares.” In the Nanded division, the sugarcane cultivation area, usually around 1.41 lakh hectares, is projected to decrease to approximately 1.25 lakh hectares this year.
Khemnar emphasized that the final sugarcane cultivation area will depend on future rainfall patterns. He also noted that the state’s overall sugarcane cultivation area has reduced from 14.02 lakh hectares last year to 11.67 lakh hectares currently.
