Argentina increases its presence in the sunflower market and reduces global price pressure
Argentina’s rising sunflower seed exports are stabilising global markets. Shipments of up to 60,000 tons in December signal renewed activity, with more vessels expected. Exports may reach 460,000 tons in 2025/26, over triple last year. Expanded processing capacity could hit 5.4 million tons, boosting sunflower oil and meal exports.
Sunflower seed shipments from Argentina picked up towards the end of the year and became a significant factor in stabilizing the global market. In early December, the country shipped two shipments totaling approximately 50,000-60,000 tons, bound for Portugal and South Africa. This signaled Argentina’s return to a more active export market, according to Oil World (Germany).
Export activity may intensify in the coming weeks. Traders estimate that another vessel carrying sunflower seeds is scheduled to depart for the Black Sea region in late December or January, although the specific destination has not yet been determined.
Analysts note that increased supply from South America is easing tensions that have developed amid declining sunflower production in the Northern Hemisphere. In the short and medium term, this could curb further price increases and even create the preconditions for a price correction.
In total, in the 2025/26 season (October-September), sunflower seed exports from Argentina are estimated at around 460 thousand tons, which is more than three times higher than the previous marketing year, when deliveries amounted to only 133 thousand tons.
At the same time, the country is expanding its processing capacity. Processing volumes are expected to reach a new all-time high in 2026 thanks to the launch of new facilities. In the 2025/26 season, sunflower processing could increase to 5.4 million tons, paving the way for increased exports of sunflower oil and meal—to an estimated 1.83 million tons and 1.75 million tons, respectively.
