Assam: Bongaigaon Refinery Launches E-20 Ethanol-Blended Petrol, Advancing India’s Biofuel Goals

The Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR) in Chirang district has launched E-20, 20% ethanol-blended petrol, advancing India’s National Biofuels Policy. This milestone reduces crude oil dependency, promotes rural economic growth through agricultural ethanol production, and mitigates air pollution. Since 2021, BGR has steadily increased ethanol blending, culminating in this latest achievement, aligning with the government’s goal of 20% blending by April 2025.

KOKRAJHAR: The Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR) situated at Dhaligaon in Chirang district has successfully produced and certified E-20 (20% ethanol blended petrol). The official launch of E-20 was flagged off on December 25 by NK Barua, ED & Refinery Head, BGR in the presence of JJ Das, CGM(Pj), Mihir Singhal, CGM(TS&HSE) and other senior officials of the Refinery and Marketing.

This initiative of BGR is an important step towards Government of India’s National Biofuels Policy which aims supply of 20% ethanol blended petrol by April 2025. The blending of ethanol with petrol, especially 20% ethanol blending in petrol, is a major step toward reducing India’s over-reliance on the crude oil import from other countries for meeting its growing energy demand. This initiative would contribute to reduction in dependency towards crude oil import by using 20% ethanol in petrol, the dependency on imported crude oil shall be reduced which is also a move towards long-term energy security of the country.

It will also boost rural economic growth. The production of ethanol primarily depends on agricultural products like sugarcane, maize, and other bio-crops. By increasing ethanol demand, farmers and rural communities benefit from enhanced agricultural production and value-added opportunities, stimulating economic growth and providing additional income sources in rural areas.

It will help in air pollution mitigation. Ethanol combustion produces fewer pollutants such as carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds compared to conventional petrol. This reduction in emissions directly contributes to cleaner air, improving public health and helping to combat the growing problem of air pollution.

BGR has played a leading role in the production & supply of ethanol blended petrol in the region, achieving the following milestones for enhancing ethanol blending in petrol in line with Government of India’s National Biofuels Policy:

13th Aug’21: Launch of ethanol blended petrol for the 1st time by dispatching through Tank Truck Lorry (TTL)  19th Jan’22: Launch of E-10 (with 10% ethanol blend). 17th Feb’22: Dispatch of ethanol blended petrol via Railway rakes for the 1st time. 14th Apr’22: Industry-first to unload full rake of Ethanol. 16th Feb’23: Launch of E-12 (with 12% ethanol blend). 6th May’24: Launch of E-15 (with 15% ethanol blend). 25th Dec’24: Launch of E-20 (with 20% ethanol blend).
