Assam: Ethanol Project in NRL to Begin Commercial Production in June-July

The Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. (NRL) Ethanol Project is set to begin commercial production in June-July 2025, with an investment of nearly Rs 4,000 crore. This project, along with the expansion of NRL’s refining capacity to six million metric tonnes, will generate significant employment opportunities. A bamboo-based bio-ethanol project, in partnership with CESPOLISH OI & Associates, is also underway, aiming to produce 49,000 metric tonnes of ethanol annually. With 70% of the expansion completed, the refinery is poised to become a key development driver in Assam.
BOKAKHAT: Commercial production in the Numaligarh Refinery Ltd. (NRL) Ethanol Project is set to begin in June-July this year. The project, which involves an investment of nearly Rs 4,000 crore, is expected to generate numerous direct and indirect employment opportunities, according to Bhaskar Jyoti Phuk, Managing Director of Numaligarh Refinery.
Established on July 9, 1999 as a high-profile initiative for the nation, Numaligarh Refinery has been recognized as a special enterprise within India. Having been granted recognition on April 22, 1993 and initiated with an annual refining capacity of three million metric tonnes, the refinery has significantly contributed to the development of the state. In addition to increasing profits, the enterprise aims to expand the refining capacity of Numaligarh Refinery to six million metric tonnes, with the Assam-based Bio Refinery Private Limited’s bio-ethanol project being one of its key initiatives.
Moreover, the plan to boost the annual refining capacity to nine million metric tonnes at Numaligarh Refinery has already received approval from the central government. Expansion work, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 22,594 crore, is currently underway. In Numaligarh, a bamboo-based bio-ethanol project is being developed as a joint venture with CESPOLISH OI & Associates holding a majority stake. The proposed expenditure for this project is around Rs 950 crore, and production was anticipated to start from the first quarter of this year. Both projects, the bamboo-based bio-ethanol project and the refinery expansion, are progressing concurrently.
Numaligarh Refinery is considered a profitable venture within the state. To further boost regional development, the refinery has enabled the formation of Assam’s Bio Refinery Private Limited to establish the bamboo-based bio-ethanol project. This project, apart from processing other raw materials, is designed to have a production capacity of 49 thousand metric tonnes of ethanol, utilizing about 300 thousand metric tonnes of bamboo annually. Currently, over 70 percent of the expansion work at Numaligarh Refinery has been completed, with advanced machinery imported from abroad. Once the expansion is complete, the refinery will stand as one of the premier initiatives in the state.
