Wheat News in English

Australia has announced its 2024/25 wheat exports, with volumes rising to 23.5 million tonnes.

Australia exported 23.49 million tonnes of wheat in 2024/25, higher than last season but below the 2022/23 record. Bulk shipments dominated, with Indonesia and the Philippines as main buyers. Lower Chinese demand reduced totals. New forecasts suggest production could rise to nearly 37 million tonnes next season, supporting stronger future exports.

Australia exported 23.49 million tonnes of wheat and durum wheat in the 2024/25 marketing year (October 2024 – September 2025), according to updated data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. While this result is below the record 31.67 million tonnes in 2022/23, it exceeds the 19.59 million tonnes of the previous season, when a smaller harvest in Western Australia limited export capacity.

Bulk exports accounted for 21.64 million tons of the total, while containerized exports accounted for 2.4 million tons. In the container segment, the largest buyers were Thailand (329,000 tons), Malaysia (300,000 tons), and Indonesia (264,000 tons). Among bulk export destinations, the leading buyers were Indonesia (3.96 million tons), the Philippines (3.21 million tons), and China (1.48 million tons).

Compared to the 2023/24 marketing year, Australian wheat exports have declined, in part due to lower demand from China, a key buyer last year. Meanwhile, the new harvest season is already approximately 30% complete, and according to the ABARES forecast of September 2, the gross wheat harvest in the 2024/25 marketing year could reach 33.77 million tonnes.

As of October 30, Lachstock Consulting forecasts further growth: in 2025/26, production could increase to 36.83 million tonnes, and exports to 24.59 million tonnes. This will allow Australia to maintain a strong position in Southeast Asian markets.

The updated November USDA WASDE report will make adjustments to global balances. The September USDA estimate, even before the government shutdown, projected 34.5 million tonnes of production and 25 million tonnes of exports for Australia, but did not include October harvest results.
