Bangchak launches pilot project for sustainable aviation fuel delivery to major Thai airports

A pilot project has been launched to deliver Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) via pipelines to Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, aiming to help the aviation sector reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Backed by Bangchak Corporation and partners, it blends SAF with Jet A1 fuel. The SAF production facility is set to begin operations in early 2025, producing 1 million liters daily from used cooking oil. The initiative is aligned with ICAO and IATA standards, bolstering Southeast Asia’s clean energy leadership.

A pilot project has been launched to deliver Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through the pipeline system serving Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang International Airports, aiming to support the aviation industry’s objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This initiative aligns with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and involves both domestic and international airlines in the SAF alliance, reported Bangkok Post.

Key figures at the project’s launch included Mr. Chaiwat Kovavisarach, Group CEO and President of Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, Mr. Chakrasnit Kritsa-ardjai, Senior Executive Vice President of Accounting and Finance at Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services Public Company Limited (BAFS), and Mr. Jesad Thupiya, Managing Director of BAFS Pipeline Transportation Limited (BPT).

The collaboration focuses on blending SAF with jet fuel (Jet A1) and pioneering its pipeline delivery to the two major airports. This pilot project aims to establish the infrastructure necessary for SAF production and usage, boosting economic opportunities and establishing a leadership position in clean energy in Southeast Asia. Bangchak has invested over THB 8.5 billion to develop SAF production from used cooking oil through its subsidiary, BSGF Co., Ltd. The construction of the SAF production unit at Bangchak Refinery in Phra Khanong is on track, with production expected to begin in early Q2 of 2025, targeting a capacity of 1 million liters per day.
